NATO to ‘defend Turkey’ over Syria as border attacks intensify

NATO will defend alliance member Turkey, which struck back after mortar rounds fired from Syria landed inside its border, the alliance’s Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said at a meeting in Prague on Monday.

“NATO as an organization will do what it takes to protect and defend Turkey, our ally. We have more plans in place to make sure that we can protect and defend Turkey and hopefully that way also deter so that attacks on Turkey will not take place,” he said.

Iran launched military drills across half the country on Monday, warning it would act against aggressors less than a week after Washington accused Iranian warplanes of firing on a US drone.


The maneuvers will take place this week across 330,000 square miles of Iran's northeast, east, and southeast regions, Iranian media reported.

Some 8,000 elite and regular army troops will participate, backed by bombers and fighter planes, while missile, artillery and surveillance systems will be tested, various media said.

Another shell landed near the Israeli defense position at El Hazaka on the Golan Monday, Nov. 12, less than 24 hours after Damascus promised through UNDOF peacekeepers to silence the mortar battery responsible for “stray shells” landing in Israel. The promise was delivered after Israel fired a Tamuz guided missile 4 kilometers into Syria as a warning shot. So Monday, Israeli tank guns opened fire on Syrian army positions and knocked out the battery responsible for sending shells across the border into Israel.

A Syrian fighter jet has bombed a rebel-held area near the Turkish border, killing at least six people and wounding a dozen others, while a rocket propelled grenade also landed inside Turkey, officials and witnesses have said.
The jet bombed the town of Ras al-Ain, metres from the Turkish frontier, on Monday as forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad tried to wrest control of the area back from rebels.


British troops 'may be flown to Syria', head of armed forces admits

British troops could be sent to Syria in the event of a major humanitarian crisis, the head of the armed forces has admitted

General Sir David Richards said plans were being drawn up in case winter made conditions on the ground worse.
Any intervention would be 'limited' and needed the support of people inside Syria, he said.
But it would be seen as a potential step towards a full-scale military intervention bringing British forces directly into conflict with the regime of president Bashar al-Assad.

    If events play out over the longer time scale without the United States and the People's Republic of China firing missiles at each other which are capable of carrying 8 to 12 atomic warheads during the third decade of this century the third world war might end up playing out one hundred years after the second world war played out with the same principle players participating but which very different initial conditions, instead of Japan invading China the People's Republic of China will probably end up asserting authority over Japan through force of arms, instead of Europe being the center of gravity of the war the People's Republic of China will probably become the center of gravity of the third world war, the oceans will probably become a no-mans land with the People's Republic of China using stealthy long range bombers to destroy surface ships of nation the People's Republic of China is at war with and the United States using atomic powered submarines to sink ships of nations the United States is at war with although if the People's Republic of China establishes enough of an advantage to in the air threw use of aircraft I imagine the People's Republic of China will simply destroy support facilities atomic powered submarines require as a means of eventually degrading the capability of nations the People's Republic of China is at war with to operate atomic powered submarines.
