The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (pictured above), otherwise known as the SCO, is carefully considering Iran and Pakistan's application to this eastern union of nation states. This is happening at a very critical time for Iran, especially with the rising tensions in the middle east region.
The SCO, just like NATO's article 5, also includes within its constitution, that any member nation that is attacked by another non-member nation, would require that SCO member states come to the aid and support of the attacked nation.
When Iran and Pakistan are admitted (as they will be) as member states, this will further create the framework for a domino effect of member nations coming to the defense of other member nations, whether it is NATO on the one side, or the SCO member states on the other, something similar to the domino effect during the beginnings of WWI and WWII.
I believe that China and Russia will want to push through this membership acceptance of Iran, due to perhaps their belief that if they are SCO members, then NATO will think twice about carrying out this attack on Tehran.
The second article from today's news refers to the fact that Russia today guaranteed delivery of their anti-missile/aircraft system, the S-300 (pictured above), to Iran. This system is one of the latest state of the art defense systems and has been delayed due to strong Israeli lobbying to Moscow, not to deliver the system.
These two latest actions by the SCO and Russia indicate that they sense that the attack is close at hand and that perhaps through these actions, Israel, the U.S. and the rest of NATO, will not carry out this attack on Iran.
SCO to review Iran, Pakistan membership bids
Thu, 04 Feb 2010 13:02:29 GMT
The new Secretary-General of Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), Muratbek Sansyzbayevich Imanaliev told a press conference on Wednesday in Beijing that the bloc is assessing membership applications of Iran and Pakistan submitted this year. He did not specify when a decision would be made, but earlier reports indicated that the group has already started reviewing the criteria for new memberships. Imanaliev said member states were planning to step up cooperation on regional security issues with a special focus on anti-terrorism efforts and possible economic cooperation. The SCO will hold two main summits this year. One will be held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan for a series of bilateral memorandums outlining cooperation areas including economy, trade, science and culture. The other will be held in Kabul on peace settlement in Afghanistan, responding to anti-terrorism concerns and discussing ways to provide economic and humanitarian aids to the war-torn country for regional peace and stability. China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan are currently members of the SCO. Iran, an observer member since 2005, has been seeking to join the 9-year-old international organization since 2008.
Iran's membership in the SCO would help the country be included in a powerful coalition with its regional allies China and Russia. Some consider the SCO to be a potential future counterweight to NATO influence in Eurasia.

'Russia guarantees delivery of S-300 system to Iran'
Thu, 04 Feb 2010 21:17:15 GMT
Iran's ambassador to Russia says Moscow has guaranteed that it will deliver the S-300 missile defense system to Iran. "Iran is ready to receive this system and our Russian colleagues have assured us that they will meet their obligations," Ambassador Seyyed Mahmoud-Reza Sajjadi said at a press conference at the main office of RIA Novosti in Moscow on Thursday. "Several technical issues [in the contract's implementation] have emerged, and we hope they will be resolved soon," the diplomat said without giving details about the problems. The S-300 system, which can track targets and fire at aircraft 120 kilometers (75 miles) away, features high jamming immunity and is able to simultaneously engage up to 100 targets. Russia and Iran have signed a deal for the sale and delivery of the missile system, but it has not been reported when the contract is to be implemented.
