Finland writes to 900,000 military reservists amid heightened tensions with Russia
The Finnish military has sent letters to the country’s 900,000 reservists and given them information about what their responsibilities would be in a “crisis situation”.

Finland has an 833 mile long border with Russia, which also makes the bulk of the European Union’s border with the state.
The move comes amid escalated air exercises between Nato and Russian warplanes with reports that the two blocs are routinely testing each other’s borders in the Baltic and English channel.
A television announcement was also broadcast on Finnish channels reminding reservists that “conscription is the cornerstone of Finland’s defence capability”.
Finland’s defence minister, Carl Haglund of the liberal minority language Swedish People’s Party, denied the communications campaign was related to the security situation with Russia.
“The aim of this isn’t to give out sort of message at all [to Russia],” he said, according to Finnish public broadcaster YLE.

CNN was aboard the P8-A Poseidon, America's most advanced surveillance and submarine-hunting aircraft, and quickly learned that the Chinese are themselves displeased by the U.S. pushback.

Activist to Sputnik: Saudis May Provoke War if Shahed Aid Ship Attacked

As humanitarian aid ship Iran Shahed approaches the Saudi naval blockade around Yemen, journalist and peace activist Caleb Maupin spoke to Radio Sputnik, emphasizing that any attack on the Iranian aid ship could provoke war.

"They’re killing innocent people," Maupin said of the Saudi bombing campaign in Yemen, referencing the alleged use of chemical weapons and the targeting of hospitals. "Of the four thousand people, at least, who have already died, very few of them are armed combatants of any type."

Hence the humanitarian mission of the Shahed, as it approaches the Yemeni port of Hodaida, currently held by Shia Houthi fighters.
"This is a matter of delivering medical supplies, food, flour, water, the basis, basic necessities to the people of Yemen, who are suffering under a horrific bombing campaign from the Saudis," Maupin says.

The Saudi government has said it intends to search the ship before it passes the blockade. Maupin stresses that while the ship would be fully compliant with inspections conducted by the United Nations or the International Red Cross, it has no intention of allowing the Saudi government onboard, which could serve as "some kind of provocation or incident."
"[The volunteers aboard] feel it’s their duty to go to Yemen, to risk their lives, go into a warzone, and help those who are in need," Maupin says. "And as someone from the United States, I can’t understand why my government or the Saudi government would be opposed to doing such a thing."
The ship is expected to reach Hodaida Thursday morning.

NATO's Stoltenberg tells Russia's Lavrov to pull out of Ukraine

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday he had told Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that Russia must withdraw all troops and heavy weapons from Ukraine and end its support for separatists.
The western military alliance's chief added that he had informed Lavrov, after a meeting in Brussels, that he was concerned about the large number of military exercises carried out by Russia at short notice.
"We also discussed the need for transparency, especially when we have an increased military presence along our borders... for NATO it is important to do whatever we can to avoid that incidents are spiralling out of control," he told reporters.
NATO has repeatedly criticised Moscow's involvement in the Ukraine conflict and demanded it fully implement a Ukraine ceasefire agreement. Russia denies providing any troops or arms to support rebellion in eastern Ukraine.
       

 Pentagon says Iran warships 'linked up' with cargo vessel

WASHINGTON/LONDON The Pentagon said on Tuesday that two Iranian warships have "linked up" with a cargo ship that Iran has said is carrying humanitarian aid to Yemen, as activists on board the vessel said it was due to arrive at the Yemeni port of Hodaida on Thursday.

"We're not overly concerned at this point," Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steve Warren told a briefing, adding that the ships' locations were being monitored "every step of the way."
Warren said the warships "linked up" with the Iranian cargo ship as it passed an area where the Iranian warships were, according to Tehran, conducting counter-piracy operations.
It was not immediately clear whether the warships were now in close proximity of the cargo vessel. A U.S. defense official said the warships were accompanying the cargo ship, broad language that would allow for the ships to simply be in the same general area.
A coalition of Gulf Arab countries led by Saudi Arabia has imposed searches on all ships trying to enter Yemen in a bid to prevent weapons being smuggled to the Iran-allied Houthi group which controls much of the country, including Hodaida.
